Learning a few basic Thai phrases can enhance your travel experience in Bangkok and show respect for the local culture. Here’s a friendly guide to get you started:

 

1. Hello: The most common greeting is “Sawasdee” (pronounced sah-wah-dee). Add “khrap” (for males) or “kha” (for females) at the end for politeness.

2. Thank You: To say “Thank you,” use “Khop khun” (pronounced khop-koon). Again, add “khrap” or “kha” for politeness.

3. Yes and No: “Yes” is “Chai” (pronounced chai), and “No” is “Mai chai” (pronounced mai-chai).

4. Please: To be polite, you can add “Khrap” (for males) or “Kha” (for females) to requests, like “Please give me” would be “Khor thot khrap” (pronounced kor-tote-khrap) for males and “Khor thot kha” (pronounced kor-tote-kha) for females.

5. Excuse Me or Sorry: To get someone’s attention or apologize, you can use “Khor thot” (pronounced kor-tote).

6. Numbers: Learning numbers can be handy for shopping and bargaining. Here are the first few: 1 – “Neung,” 2 – “Song,” 3 – “Saam,” 4 – “See,” 5 – “Haa.”

7. How Much?: If you want to ask about the price of something, say “Tao rai?” (pronounced tau rai).

8. Goodbye: To bid farewell, use “Laeo phohp gan mai?” (pronounced leow pawb gan mai).

9. I Don’t Understand: If you’re stumped, say “Mai khao jai” (pronounced mai kao jai).

10. Water: For a crucial one, “Water” is “Nam” (pronounced nahm).

11. Delicious: To compliment the food, say “Aroi” (pronounced ah-roy).

12. I’m Lost: If you need help with directions, say “Chan/Phom loi” (for males) or “Di chan/ka loi” (for females).

13. Bathroom: When nature calls, ask for the “Hong nam” (pronounced hong nam).
